Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Night Safari
Welcome & River Journey
Upon arrival at the airport or bus terminal in Puerto Maldonado, you'll be greeted by our staff and taken to the office for check-in and a brief orientation. From there, we’ll head to the river port and board a motorized canoe to begin our journey on the Madre de Dios River.
Arrival at the Lodge
After about an hour of river travel, we’ll arrive at the lodge. You’ll be welcomed with a tropical fruit juice and introduced to the lodge staff and fellow travelers. Then, you’ll settle into your room and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Afternoon Visit to Monkey Island
In the afternoon, we’ll take a short boat ride to the beautiful Monkey Island. Here, you’ll have the chance to observe and interact with several monkey species native to the Amazon, such as Capuchin, Squirrel, and Spider monkeys — perfect for fun photos!
Evening Activity: Night Safari
After dinner, we’ll head out on an exciting night safari along the riverbanks to spot caimans resting on the sandbars. With some luck, you may also see other nocturnal wildlife like capybaras, frogs, and reptiles. A flashlight is highly recommended to make the most of this unique experience.
Overnight at the jungle lodge.
Day 2: Jungle Hike – Sandoval Lake – Night Walk
Morning Excursion to Sandoval Lake
After breakfast, we’ll depart for a guided excursion to one of the most beautiful lakes in the Amazon rainforest — Sandoval Lake, home to piranhas, turtles, various bird species, monkeys, and colorful fish. The adventure begins with a 40-minute boat ride along the river into the heart of the Tambopata National Reserve, followed by a 2-hour hike through lush jungle trails.
Exploration by Canoe
At the end of the trail, a wooden canoe will be waiting to take us across the tranquil waters of Sandoval Lake. Here, we may spot endangered giant river otters (up to 2 meters long), black caimans (up to 4 meters long), and many other incredible species that call this pristine environment home.
Return & Lunch at the Lodge
After this unforgettable lake tour, we’ll return to the lodge to enjoy lunch and relax during the afternoon.
Evening Activity: Night Jungle Walk
After nightfall, we’ll take a guided night walk near the lodge to observe nocturnal creatures such as insects, frogs, reptiles, and other jungle animals that come alive after dark. The day concludes with dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Macaw Clay Lick – Full Day Adventure
Early Departure & Journey into the Reserve
The day begins at 3:00 AM with a van ride along the Interoceanic Highway for about 60 km (approx. 2 hours) until we reach the banks of the Tambopata River. From there, we’ll board a motorized canoe and travel for 1.5 hours deep into the Tambopata National Reserve.
Visit to the World’s Largest Macaw Clay Lick
We’ll arrive at the largest macaw clay lick in the world, where thousands of macaws and parrots gather each morning to feed on mineral-rich clay. Along the way, we may spot wildlife such as capybaras, deer, tapirs, and—if we’re lucky—even a jaguar.
Jungle Picnic Breakfast
Enjoy a picnic-style breakfast surrounded by the Amazon rainforest. After a short walk, we’ll quietly position ourselves near the clay lick and wait as colorful birds begin to arrive — a breathtaking opportunity for photography and birdwatching. Insect repellent is highly recommended for this experience.
Local Lunch & Return to Puerto Maldonado
After the macaw spectacle, we’ll return by boat to a local riverside restaurant to enjoy a delicious lunch featuring regional dishes. You’ll have time to relax or take a short forest walk before heading back to Puerto Maldonado, where we’ll spend the night in a city hotel.
